Wastewater Treatment Plant Overview
The Greater Augusta Utility District operates a wastewater collection system, stormwater system and a secondary treatment wastewater plant that accepts wastewater from three other communities who are members of the Trunkline Group.
Located on the Kennebec River along the Kennebec River Rail Trail, the wastewater treatment facility is an activated sludge secondary treatment plant.
The plant treats an average of 4 million gallons per day (MGD) of wastewater, with flows reaching 40 MGD during rain storms.
The wastewater treatment process is complex. One of our biggest problems is our pumps getting clogged with wipes. Check out the "Save Your Pipes, Don't Flush Baby Wipes" Flyer here.
Below is an overview of the wastewater treatment process:
Sources of Wastewater, Wastewater Collection System
The Greater Augusta Utility District treats wastewater from the communities of Augusta, Hallowell, Manchester, Monmouth and Winthrop. The wastewater comes from homeowners, commercial establishments and industries and is collected through a system of underground pipes that flow into a wastewater collection system. The collection system sends the wastewater to a system of pumping stations that include small grinder pumps, three small submersible pump stations, ten medium-sized pump stations throughout the greater Augusta area and six large “trunkline” pumping stations that are part of an inter-community operation and maintenance agreement known as the "Trunkline Agreement."

Wastewater Interceptors/Treatment
After the wastewater is conveyed through the wastewater collection system, it enters the treatment plant from the east and west sides of the Kennebec River through large pipes called "interceptors." The wastewater receives primary and secondary treatment daily, and disinfection from May to September, before being discharged to the Kennebec River.
